The Bourne Ultimatum
Directed by Paul Greengrass
Starring Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, David Straithairn,
Scott Glenn, Joan Allen, Paddy Considine, Albert Finney
Now playing everywhere

The best scene in the new Jason Bourne film (starring hunky Matt Damon as Jason Bourne) has to be the fight scene which moves from a Tangiers rundown living room, in a ratty looking house to the bathroom, with Damon as 'Bourne' using various objects to deflect the blows of a trained assassin (Joey Ansah). That, and the endless chase scenes are so exciting, that when I left the screening a couple of weeks ago, I found that my heart was beating like a trip-hammer.

The latest installment, based on the Robert Ludlum titles, The Bourne Ultimatum has a lot of chase scenes, but it also has a lot of close-ups of Julia Stiles (who plays another agent, Nicky Parsons) and Damon, trying to figure out his past. This is the meat of the story, and what makes the rest of the film have some depth, as these quieter scenes with young 'Bourne' trying to figure out his missing past give give the audience something to chew on before the intense chase and fight scenes take over.

And yes, there are also the 'usual suspects' from other Bourne films, in the guise of a determined, if evil FBI agent (David Strathairn), who will stop at nothing to eliminate what he sees as a threat to national security. As well as his co-hort (a less evil, but equally determined CIA operative/agency leader), Pam Landy (Joan Allen), who ends up helping Bourne, while taking down the entire plot behind this mysterious man's past. Stuff to make one think, especially as our own, real government continues to work behind the scenes on heaven only knows what in the 'fight against terror'.

Definitely for all Bourne fans, and Damon fans, The Bourne Ultimatum is perhaps the most visceral of the series, and the most exciting one I've seen. With very little subplot, or love story material, this one is a bare bones thriller/chase film that should satisfy the most hungry action flick fan. Go see it, but remember, it'll make your heart do triple flips.
