U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) was honored by the National Stonewall Democrats on the evening of Thursday, August 2, during the organization's Capitol Champions event hosted by Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA). She was recognized, in part, for her work on the Tax Equity for Domestic Partner and Health Plan Beneficiaries Act.
Gregg Gallo, a representative of the Washington State chapter of the Stonewall Democrats, presented the award during the celebration at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Five other individuals were also named "Capitol Champions," including John Conyers (D-MI), Ed Markey (D-MA), Marty Meehan, a former U.S. Representative, Olga Vives, Executive Vice President of the National Organization for Woman, and Patricia Friend, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants.
Cantwell and Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) are lead sponsors of the Tax Equity for Domestic Partner and Health Plan Beneficiaries Act in the U.S. Senate. The pending legislation would eliminate a major domestic partner penalty that counts employer-paid health care benefits as taxable income. The IRS does not count employer-paid health care benefits as taxable income for married couples
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives on March 29, 2007. He had introduced similar bills in the 107th and 108th Congresses.
