Josh Groban to chat with Seattle Gay News; Arctic Monkeys announce WaMu Theater date; Vonda Shepard's surprise phone call; 'True Colors' soundtrack to be released
A phone date with the one and only, Josh Groban
I have absolutely no idea what Josh Groban and I will discuss when our phone lines magically intersect this week. Did I mention that I'm calling him? Or, is he calling me? I'm still not sure. But what I do know is that his adorable face will be on the receiving end of a phone call in the days ahead. The Grammy-nominated cutie pie recently completed a string of sold out concert dates in Europe, after the first leg of his North American tour. The second leg of the "Awake" road outing brings him to Key Arena on Saturday, August 18. At press time, tickets were still available. Opening for Groban is Angelique Kidjo, the African diva who interviewed with Seattle Gay News earlier this year. Having seen Groban in concert before, at the Paramount Theatre in 2004, I advise buying tickets to see him perform live. Somewhat dramatic, yet captivating and inspiring, Groban puts on a terrific show. Tickets, priced between $45 and $95, are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations. Check back next week for more news on Josh Groban.

Arctic Monkeys at WaMu Theater in late September, tickets on sale July 28
I remember when Arctic Monkeys were hanging out at The Crocodile Café. So innocent and sweet. Except for Alex Turner. He was a bit of a dick. Shot me a dirty look. It wasn't like I was hitting on him, or was I? Well, I'm sure he doesn't remember me. No one ever does. Anywho, the Sheffield, England-based quartet is huge. Huge as in huge rock stars on both sides of the pond. Last week, in fact, they were nominated for UK's prestigious Mercury Music Prize, an industry award which they won in 2006 for their damn fine debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2006). Their concert earlier this year at The Showbox was smoking! I stood near the back and saw some interesting dance moves by some very interesting people. If you missed that concert, you can catch Arctic Monkeys on their next Seattle swing-through at WaMu Theater on September 29. Put it on your calendar and draw circles around it because it's going to be a wild time! The band's sophomore effort, Favourite Worst Nightmare, has been a critical favorite since its April release. Tickets for Arctic Monkeys go on sale tomorrow morning (10am), July 28, at all Ticketmaster locations priced at $25.

"Ally McBeal" alum Vonda Shepard calls directly into SGN
I was at my desk, eating the rest of my Baja chicken chorizo tacos from Taco Time, and the phone rings. It's Vonda Shepard! She asked if I knew who she was. I said, "uh, yeah!". Then, we gabbed for about five minutes. Shepard shot to fame when she appeared on multiple episodes of Ally McBeal, playing the resident singer-pianist in the club patronized by the cast. No sooner did I dip my last tortilla chip in hot sauce when the jazz-pop artist revealed to me that she's coming to Seattle on August 31 for a two show appearance at The Triple Door. She thought I'd get a kick out of her calling me directly, not her publicist. And I did. Get a kick. A few artists - I'm not going to name names - actually correspond with me directly. Most, however, employ a party-on-the-weekend publicist fresh out of college to dial the numbers for them and answer their email. That's that. More on Vonda Shepard in the weeks ahead. Reservations for her performances at The Triple Door can be made now by visiting www.thetripledoor.net.

Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" tour captured on CD
Didn't attend Cyndi Lauper's Gay-cheerleading "True Colors" tour? Neither did I. Probably because she skipped the entire Northwest when dates were initially announced for her community-hugging road trip. And she never did adjust them to include Seattle, a shame. But hats off to the girl, she made it happen. By it, I mean Lauper dreamed up the idea of gathering Gay artists, like Rufus Wainwright and Indigo Girls, and taking them on a multi-city tour to raise awareness for equality. The dream came true. Now the "True Colors" tour is in the record books, and for those unable to hop on a plane or take time off from work to catch one of a dozen concerts around the US, you can experience a morsel of the excitement on a soundtrack featuring many of the artists who partook of the rainbow-loving extravaganza, including Lauper, Wainwright, Indigo Girls, Debbie Harry, Erasure, The Dresden Dolls and The Gossip. Proceeds from the CD will go to the Human Rights Campaign.
