Emerald City Classic Hosts Softballers from Across the Country

The Emerald City Softball Association hosted the Emerald City Classic Softball tournament June 28th thru July 1st. This semi-annual tournament was the largest in Seattle's history at 52 teams. Teams from across the US and Canada came to play, including teams from Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver BC and over 20 teams from Seattle.

Tournament play began early Saturday morning under sunny skies with perfect softball weather that held through the entire weekend. Seattle teams did well and won two of the play divisions while teams from outside the state took home the top honors in the other two divisions.

The Championship Games for 4 of the Divisions were played at Celebration Park late Sunday afternoon. The Open B Division Championship game saw the local Seattle Shock team taking on the Portland Haze. The Seattle Shock went through the tournament undefeated and beat the Portland Haze 15 to 6 in the Open B Division Championship Game.

The Open C Division championship featured two out of town teams, the Hollywood Patrol vs. the Atlanta Packers. The Packers took the first game 9 to 8 to force a second and deciding Championship game in the double elimination style tournament. The Hollywood Patrol came back in the second match and defeated the Packers 16 to 6 to win the Open C Division. The Open D division also featured teams from outside the state in the Tournament finale. The Texas Titans from Austin played the LA Rascals for the Championship. The Rascals won the first game 10 to 7 to also force a seco9nd game to decide the Tournament Champions. The Titans also came back in the final game of Tournament play with a 15 to 4 to win to take the Open D Division crown.

The Women's Division Championship game saw the Changes from Seattle play the Screaming Sirens from Seattle in a defensive struggle but Changes finally pulled away in the last inning to beat the Sirens 6 to 1 and win the Women's Division.

With the large number of teams in this years tournament the Open C and D divisions had separate recreational or 'Surge" divisions that played on Sunday. The Chicago Spin won the Championship of Open C Sunday Surge Division by defeating the Seattle Thunder. The Portland Bears defeated the Seattle Dirty Dogs 27 to 9 to win the Championship of the Open D Sunday Surge Division.

The tournament hosted several off the field events during the tournament. It including the Mr. ECC Jock contest at Changes Thursday night to kick off the weekends events. On Friday Night registration for the tournament play took place at a long time sponsor of the Emerald City Softball Association, R Place. Saturday Night saw a Pre Funk Party at Purr and a Red, White & Blue party The Cuff.

The events of the tournament ended at the Awards Pizza party at Neighbours on Sunday Evening, with the awards presentations that included trophies for all 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th place teams as well as the winners of the Sunday Surge divisions. In addition All stars from each team and tournament 'Sportsmanship' and 'Spirit' awards were presented during the ceremonies.
