Band ready to rock Pride again with new Lesbian bassist

They were a big hit last year and the year before that and, boys and girls; they're ready to get your mojo rising all over again for this year's QueerFest on Saturday, March 23, at Volunteer Park. And, with their new bassist, 'Dammit,' playing with them, Sister Hyde should be even more of a treat than ever, according to lead singer and guitarist 'Hyde', who spoke to me via phone recently.
The band has been getting heavy rotation not only on some Seattle stations, but also in places like Chicago, New York City, L.A., and, even, Canada. And, for those of you who can't wait for your favorite Sister Hyde song, they can be heard on MySpace too.
"Yes, the 'Grimm Brothers' are gone. They were too young and they had to get back to school and their mother was worried we were corrupting them," said Hyde of the two fifteen-year-old guitarists who played with Sister Hyde last year at The Comet Tavern. He laughed and said that the two did bring a group of younger fans to hear Sister Hyde. "But our blue-haired, Lesbian bassist, Dammit, is very popular with the community and should bring even more folks out this year," he went on to say.
The group has been through many incarnations since Hyde first came to Seattle from L.A. back in the eighties and donned the pair of black knee-high women's boots that have become his trademark now. I asked him if he intended to do drag, as he did last year, as part of the stage show at QueerFest in Volunteer Park.
"I'm not sure yet, but I think people want me to, and I've just gotten some new gear from Frederick's (of Hollywood), so I probably will. I'll definitely be mingling with the crowd, playing my axe between the legs of the first rows of fans and using my 'mouth organ' (harmonica) again with all of the pretty girls in the audience," he said, laughing again.
And if you haven't seen Sister Hyde perform, you are in for a treat, as they harken back to some of the original 'glam' bands like Violent Femmes and Guns 'n Roses, among others. Also, the highlight of Hyde's performance is the frenzy he gets his audience into when he 'spanks his axe' on stage.
"I get them all into this chant, 'whip that bitch', and I hope there aren't any folks without a sense of humor or who are very politically correct in the audience, because they might get offended by that, but it's all in fun," said Hyde. The group goes on right after the Pride March ends at and QueerFest in Volunteer Park begins, at 1:30 p.m., something Hyde is very happy about this year.
"We'll get people all ready to party and have a good time with our act and I'm glad we're on first this year, so everyone will have a chance to enjoy us," said Hyde.
