Records temps and hot play for Emerald City Softball
by Nick Bowen - SGN Contributing Writer

Sunday saw a new record high in the Seattle area as the temperature on the field topped 86 degrees, and the teams in the Emerald City Softball Association turned up the heat as they battled and made their bids for the World Series this fall.

In the Open 'D' division the Rockets and Pirates met as unbeaten teams and the Rockets showed why they have been one of the top teams in the division for the last three years, pummeling the Pirates by a final score of 17 - 9. They went on to beat the Saints 12 - 3, with their steady defense and solid hitting. In their third game of the day they beat the Eclipse 14 - 1, to take all three games on the day and remain the only unbeaten team in the 'D' division. The Rockets have dominated their games with offense scoring 43 runs against quality teams in the division in a single weekend, and winning their games this season by an average of almost 13 runs.

The upstart Wolves ran their record to 4 - 3, with wins against the Dirty Dogs, despite some great play and hits by team leader and 'D' commissioner Ryan D.; and the Throttle, but losing a sloppy game on both sides to the Atomic, who won their 3rd game of the year.

The Buzz took the field having not won a single game dating back to last year when they went 0 - 14 and then started this year with 8 consecutive losses for a total record of 0 - 22. That all changed this weekend when, led by Tighe C. and his great hitting and stellar defensive plays, they won their first game ever in a 17 - 3 rout of the Throttle, followed up later in the day with their second win in a one run affair with the Atomic to win by a final of 7 - 6, and climb out of the division cellar for the very first time. Congratulations Buzz!

In the Open 'C' division the Blue Sox played a close game with Thunder and came out winners by a final of 11 - 8. They followed up that win with a blow out versus the Brewers winning by 14 with a final score of 23 - 9. The Blue Sox sit atop the 'C' division with a perfect 7 - 0 record and are in command of their own destiny as they try to go back to the World Series where they took the 'C' division National Title in 2005.

The POCO made a move in the division as well, Led by Gary B. they handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season with a 24 - 8 drubbing. They lost their next game to the Maulers 8 - 14 to stay just under the .500 mark at 3 - 4.

In the Open 'B' division the Pilots took a share of the division lead by winning a hard fought game versus the Sting, taking their first game of the day by a single run with a final of 13 - 12. They followed that with a convincing rout of the Angels winning by 12 with a final of 15 - 3. This pulls them even with the Shock at 6 wins and 2 losses to lead the division. The Shock Won both of their games as well with another single run affair versus the Arsenal winning 9 - 8. Their game against the Angels was close but the Shock's defense and pitching held the Angels to 7 runs and the Shock came away with their second win of the day with a final score of 13 - 7. This puts the Shock and Pilots 2 full games ahead of the rest of the pack, but tied with each other at the midway point of the season.

In the Women's Rec division the Luna Chix continue to crush all comers winning both games this weekend against the Jackels and Relocaters and maintaining their 16 run per game winning margin. The Women's Alternative division is a much closer affair with the A Crew nursing a scant half game lead over their closest rival after falling by one run to the NWConnexion this weekend. This leaves the A Crew at 9 - 2 on the season and the NWConnexion at 8 - 2 at the midway point. It looks as if the these two teams will slug it out right to the end of the season when they play each other on the final day in a game that may decide the division crown.

Be sure to follow all the action of your favorite team by coming out to the fields to cheer! Open division games are played at the North SeaTac fields, and all Women's division games are played near Greenlake at the Lower Woodlands complex.

Of course you can always follow the action and get the latest scores at www.emeraldcitysoftball.org.
