SGN A&E Writer Northwest Folklife Festival Seattle Center Memorial Day Weekend By yesterdays end (that being last Monday, Memorial Day), my cowboy booted feet were sore, but I was a happy camper, having danced, munched and schmoozed my way through this year's Northwest Folklife Festival. And the bonus? I had made tons of new friends too. The big highlight for me on Saturday evening was the Vera Stage's offerings of local hip hop, which included Senegalese hip hop and later, Jamaican reggae. And though the place was packed to the gills with a diverse mixture of hip hop lovers, the curious from the 'burbs and just about everyone else, it was still hella fun to be there. Later the draw was the Celtic music on the Northwest stage, which also drew a huge crowd of dancers and revelers, ready to party all night. By Monday, the crowds were even larger, with Seattle's weather cooperating to keep things moving merrily along and I found myself making new friends with some friendly hippies who had jewelry for sale (I bought a hemp anklet) and stories to tell. Also, enjoy the music of buskers who were playing everything from guitars and drums to violins and even a piano at one point, as well as the music of bluegrass stylists 'Creeping Time'. But my favorite of the day was the upbeat rhythms of 'The Panda Conspiracy' who kept the crowd dancing to modern reggae beats. It was definitely the best Folklife I've been to and one that'll long be remembered for so much diversity, so much joy and so many new connections made over the two days I attended. |
