by Robert Raketty - SGN Staff Writer

The Seattle Gay News has learned that Tina Podlodowski, Executive Director of the Lifelong AIDS Alliance, will step down on June 15. The announcement was made in a memo to agency staff on Wednesday, May 23. David Richart, Director of Programs, has been named as interim executive director until a replacement is found.

Podlodowski, who has held the post since 2004, wrote that she planned to take over the reigns as CEO of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of King, Pierce and Jefferson County in August. The agency provides mentors to 2,500 kids in a three county service area.

"I've made a personal decision to leave the agency as Executive Director," she wrote. "It's very sad for me to leave Lifelong, for more reasons than I can ever possibly count - and I'll save the goodbyes for when it's time."

According to the memo, the agency has grown from a $6 million organization with 55 employees to a $15 million agency with 95 employees and has doubled the number of clients Lifelong AIDS Alliance serves. "We've doubled the food program; we've made a national name for ourselves in public policy, and [have] a regional reputation as an amazingly well run place - all thanks to you," she added.

She noted that the 2008 fiscal year budget was "solid." She wrote that no job cuts were expected and cited a contribution of $1.6 million from Washington State as another sign that "things are very fine with the agency."

Podlodowski has had a diverse career in the fields of business, government and non-profits. She was a senior manager at Microsoft and was later elected to the Seattle City Council in 1995, where she became the second "out" Lesbian to serve on the city council. Furthermore, she served on the boards of the Human Rights Campaign, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and International Network of Lesbian and Gay Officials. In 2000, she was picked by Vice-President Al Gore to help draft the 2000 Democratic Party Platform.

"...[I]n all the jobs I've had, and the roles I've played, I've never worked with a more caring, compassionate and fun group of people - you all have my genuine affection and absolute respect," she wrote.

The SGN will publish an in-depth interview with Podlodowski in next week's edition.
