ECSA Hall of Fame inducts two new members
by Nick Bowen - Special to the SGN

The Emerald City Softball Association kicked off its 2007 season by inducting two new members into its Hall of Fame. Joining former inductees, this year's honorees were Gary 'Dixie' Carter and Dug Wehage.

Gary Carter known to almost everyone as 'Dixie' has been an ECSA participant for the last 11 years. His accomplishments as a player and coach include over 8 Gay World Series appearances, 6 years as a commissioner of the ECSA, and coach and player on 2 championship Gay Games teams in both Sydney and Chicago! In addition to these incredible contributions to Gay softball he has been an inspiration to several new players to the league. He has also been a huge contributor to our league ensuring that Seattle had A and B division teams that competed both locally and nationally.

Dixie himself summed up his feelings about the ECSA by saying "I consider myself so very fortunate to have found my place in the ECSA. I am very fortunate to have been a part of the ECSA past and I look forward to seeing all that the ECSA will contribute to NAGAAA in the future."

Dixie continues to play softball and to contribute to Gay sports by serving on the NAGAAA Executive Board, the national governing body for Gay softball, as the Business Development Director for the Open Division.

Dug Wehage began his softball adventure in 1995 as one of the celebrated 'Cheerleaders' with a reputation of having more cheers than softball prowess. But over the next ten years as a devoted advocate for 'a place for everyone to play' Dug took on many roles, including player, coach (sometimes to multiple teams in one year), a pick up player for tournaments, an Executive Board Member, a certified ASA Umpire, as well as the creator and the Committee Chairperson for the ECSA Hall of Fame. He has played on several championship teams, been voted an All-Star and 'most motivational player' as well as a number of other honors in his 12 years of play.

Perhaps Dug's greatest contribution to Seattle will be a legacy of creating an atmosphere of inclusion and fun. During his tenure as membership director the league grew from 12 teams to over 24 in just 6 short years.

Dug has stayed true to a vision of a fun place to play and a community where everyone is welcome and has the opportunity to participate in the game he loves. He has done so much over the years to not only increase the competitiveness in the league, but always remembers to have FUN! The "Bow of Intimidation" that he wore for two years was a ratty old bow on top of his head - just to remind folks that you can play hard; but in the end, it's a game, and most importantly - it's about community.

The ECSA Hall of Fame is proud to induct these two new members into its fraternity of players who have made a difference in our league and our community!
