Emerald City Shines on Opening Day
Emerald City Shines on Opening Day
By Nick Bowen

The Emerald City Softball Association (ECSA) Open Division played the first games of the new season this Sunday and the action on the field was as hot as the sunshine. In a record setting day in lots of ways the ECSA began play this year with 390 players on 27 teams in the open division.

The 'B' division rivalries shaped up early as the Shock used a tough defense and some timely hits to take both games on the day and capture the early lead in the division at 2 - 0. The Arsenal and Pilots both split their games to finish 1 -1 on the day, one game back of the Shock. This division has some great talent and looks to be a tough division all year, with 5 teams slugging it out for the top spot and the guaranteed World Series berth. In the 'C' Division the Alley Cats, Blue Sox, and Bulldogs all got off to a quick 2 - 0 start, and are tied at the top of the division after the first week of play.

Leading the way for the Blue Sox was a stand out effort from Mat L. who went 7 for 8 at the plate (batting .875) with 6 RBI's and no errors on defense.

Doug L. led the bulldogs with a great pitching performance backed up with a stingy defense. Holding Jerrys Kids to just 4 runs and pitching an amazing shutout against the Maulers, this first year player is one to watch.

Damon S. had an all star day as well to lead the Alley Cats to their quick start going 4 - 5 at the plate with 2 home runs and 5 RBI's on the day. Hitting to all fields and showing off some great speed in the process.

The 'D' division began play with exhibition games that were still hotly contested. In the toughest game of the week, the Saints and Pirates played an absolute classic. For 5 1/2 innings, it was a pitching and defensive duel with the Saints holding to a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates managed to strike for six runs to take a 6-1 lead heading to the seventh and final inning. In the top of the seventh, the Saints came storming back to retake the lead 8-6. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates got their first two runners on base and slowly brought both of them home en route to an 8-8 tie.

So a great start for all the teams in the Emerald City this season. To find out more about the ECSA and to follow all the teams this season, check us out at www.emeraldcitysoftball.org
