Barbie Humphrey, Grand Madame of Purr Lounge and her bevy of cats ignored the one hour mandatory jail sentence at the Rise n' Shine Big Bail Out at The Broadway Grill on Wednesday night. When ordered to produce her bail after an hour and get out of jail Barbie said, "Hell no, I'm just at the M's in my black book." By raising over $4,400 to send Rise n' Shine kids to summer camp, the extremely competitive Purr team blew apart their goal of $1,600. This was not accomplished without some tense moments. Sheriff Michael Dunlop stepped in at the last minute to prevent a brewing jail cat fight between Barbie and Belinda Cannady who shouted "Bitch you stole my bail money."

Everyone eventually got into the fray and started speed dialing friends and also asking the patrons of The Broadway Gill to pony up bail dollars. There was some creative fundraising going on. The Check Masters team has their bail matched by Kevin McCarthy owner of Check Masters. As of this writing, they are neck and neck with Purr and gaining. When all the money is put in the local depository, Rise n' Shine should have $15,000 to send kids to summer camp.

The Broadway Grill servers, patrons, managers and their incredible owner Debbie Augustavo took pity on the inmates behind bars and served up some mighty fine grits. Kudos go to the Grill's sponsorship and continued strong support of the entire AIDS community and of Rise n' Shine. Even the new sponsor AM 1090 jumped in with hooting and hollering and helped raise the ante. Judge Rick North proclaimed it the "best cat fight and dog and pony show he has seen in a long time." Already teams are strategizing for 2008.
