TONS OF NUN FUN
TONS OF NUN FUN
Not-To-Be-Missed Sister Events, March 25 & 30

By Maggie Bloodstone

Despite the misconception that they have always been bearded, be-habited genetic males, The Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence have been all-inclusive since their immaculate inception almost 30 years ago. Anyone with the calling, desire, and willingness to smear a half pound of clown white on their face several times a month is welcome in any House anywhere on the planet. And our own Abbey Of St. Joan has a member who is part of a unique, almost nonexistent subgroup- a 50-year-old human female& who ADMITS her age!

Sister Castrata Stigmata BananaFana Fo-Fata came into the world March 25, 1957, remembers the Seattle World's Fair, Laugh-In, seeing Alice Cooper the year she graduated high school, AIDS when it was called 'Gay Related Immune Deficiency', and the year John Lennon and Reagan were both shot (and being really pissed because the wrong one died). She decided she must have her fellow Sisters around her on the occasion of her 50th birthday, and of course, whenever two or more nuns are gathered together, there must be a fundraiser, and Castrata's natal day bash will also be a benefit for GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (A national organization dedicated to fighting homophobia promoting acceptance where it's needed the most-America's schools. Check out www.glsen.org). Purr Cocktail Lounge will be hosting the soiree this Sunday, the 25th, from 7-10ish (or while Sr. Castrata is still upright). In addition to the usual raffles for fabulous goodies, potent jello shots, and nuns sweet-talking you out of your cash, there will be a come-as-your-favorite-decade-from-the-last-50-years costume contest (poodle skirts, go-go boots, Kiss tour t-shirts, Miami Vice jackets, flannel shirts, and whatever was hip last week will be eligible). Plus, you former Catholics will have the opportunity to get back at Sister Mary Diesel and her steel ruler from 4th grade and spank the birthday nun&for a price. (She's old, but she doesn't have to give it away, y'know.)

And, on Friday, March 30-just in time to recover from Sunday- Novice Sister Amore Flagellare will be presenting 'Cineoke' at the Theater Off Jackson. Cine-What? Well, it's part Karaoke, part Rocky Horror Picture Show, and with a roomful of Sisters, it's a hella fun evening. What you do is, pick a scene from a wide selection of classic and not-so-classic film musicals, grab a mic, and belt along with Barbra, holler along with Hedwig, or ululate with Olivia Newton-John. (Me, I'm planning on doing 'Singin' In The Rain'-the Clockwork Orange version.) You also have the option to bring your own favorite DVD or VHS if, like myself, you suspect your taste might be a little, shall we say, esoteric-? Admission is a mere $5, and it all goes to benefit Three Dollar Bill Cinema, to help them continue to bring queer Seattle great events like the annual Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. (FYI, Three Dollar Bill holds a monthly Cineoke at the Rendezvous' Jewel Box Theatre-the next will be April 9. Check out www.seattlequeerfilm.com)

Purr is located at 1518 11th Ave., Capitol Hill, 325-3112. Theatre Off Jackson is at 409 7th Ave. S., in the International District.
