A moving documentary about 'the lost boys' that will have people talking
A moving documentary about 'the lost boys' that will have people talking

God Grew Tired of Us
Christopher Dillon Quinn & Tommy Walker
Opened February 2nd

I was so moved by the documentary put out by National Geographic and Newmarket Films, that details the struggles and triumphs of four 'lost boys' (the young men who, because of war in their region of the Sudan, in the mid-eighties, had to escape, and ended up in a refugee camp in Kenya, before some settled in the U.S.A.), who are resettled in Syracuse, New York, and Pittsburgh, that I've bent everyone's ear I know to tell them about it. The documentary is that riveting and, believe me, if you see it, you'll probably be talking too.

The film, which lets the young men, who are chosen by a Catholic aid organization to be relocated in the U.S., speak for themselves, and the film follows them as they try to reconcile life as they have known it, and life in a country with so much more than they've had access to. From extreme poverty on their journey from their villages, often running the risk of being slaughtered by those who also killed their parents and others siblings, the boys tell a story that is at once horrific and also a tribute to the human spirit to survive, no matter what the obstacle.

Their experiences with such mundane tasks as grocery shopping and learning to use the facilities in the apartment they are relocated to serve to humble, as well as give the viewer a chance to understand how different our lives are compared to people in other, developing nations. I felt myself both amused and deeply touched by the attempts these young men make to 'fit in', with one of them finally cracking under the pressure of acculturation and ending up in a mental institution. If you see no other films this year, do see God Grew Tired of Us, and you'll see why I can't stop talking about this incredible film. I wish it had been released last year, so it could have been considered for an Oscar this year.
