Lee Lightning
Lee Lightning
Lee Lightning, known to her family as Cherilee Mae Shipley and to some old friends as Lee Shipley, died January 3, 2007 in Swedish Hospital, of complications from surgery and long term health problems.

Born in Tacoma on March 31, 1951, Lee was an exuberant Aries who rode horses as a girl and knew at an early age that she loved women. She moved to Seattle, then to Ithaca, New York, and finally back to Seattle, where she lived for the rest of her life.

Lee was a baby dyke and a tomboy from childhood. She was a separatist dyke who wrote controversial graffiti and did other actions to fight patriarchy. She was a leather dyke and a butch top who was a friend and supporter of many lesbian sex workers. She was a spiritual pagan dyke who loved to go into the woods at winter solstice to decorate a fir tree with fruit, nuts, and popcorn to provide winter food for the animals. She was a self-identified "big kid" who loved Xena the warrior princess, The Lion King, and laser tag. She was a wheat-free chef who taught cooking classes using the recipes she created. She was a poor woman who survived by her wits and determination and the help of her friends. She was a disabled dyke who worked to raise awareness within the lesbian communty about disability issues-especially about hidden disabilities. She was a founding organizer of the Lesbian Assistance Project, which provided volunteer help to ill and disabled dykes in the Seattle area from 1993 to 1997.

Lee is survived by her cousin Jeanie Luna, her dog Sadie, her kitty Abby, and many old friends who will miss her. A memorial is planned for Friday evening, January 26. Call 206 910 3937 for details or to make a contribution to help with the cost of funeral arrangements.
