In a candid interview with the Seattle Gay News last week, Daryl Palumbo of the punk-pop band Head Automatica said he was gung-ho about having two boys lock lips in the music video for "Graduation Day", the first cut off the group's new album Popaganda. Palumbo then went on to say that he backs Gay marriage and he sometimes leaves soaking wet underwear behind in dressing rooms, following an overly energetic, sweaty performance. Alas, the straight rocker gets a gold star for truly flexing his open-mindedness and for allowing us to imagine his briefs being yanked down and landing on the floor. To quote a has-been celebrity, "that's hot!"
Head Automatica, representing Long Island, New York, combines danceable punk rock with retro pop, best described as Franz Ferdinand meets Joe Jackson. In fact, Palumbo's vocals are delightfully similar to Jackson's on a few tracks from the quintet's aforementioned Popaganda. The CD's standout entries, "Nowhere Fast" and "Lying Through Your Teeth", are capable of getting Head Automatica fans to shake their asses and pump their fists in the air at the same time. And that's just in their living rooms. In concert, with hundreds of other Head lovers, the scene should resemble a clip from an MTV spring break party. This must've been what the cable music channel had in mind when they booked Head Automatica for all dates on its "MTV2 $2 Bill Series", a 30-city tour that winds its way to Seattle tomorrow night.
At The Fenix (formerly The Premier), Head Automatica is sandwiched in a three-band lineup that also features Cobra Starship and 30 Seconds to Mars, fronted by actor-hottie Jared Leto. A Beautiful Lie, the debut album by 30 Seconds to Mars, was recently certified platinum (1 million copies sold). Leto's crossover success from film to music puts him in an elite group, considering other Hollywood cuties haven't been so fortunate (Keanu Reeves, Adam Brody, Kevin Bacon). I estimate Head Automatica will hit the stage sometime between 9 and 9:30. The Fenix is located in the Sodo District, about two blocks from Starbucks headquarters. I particularly like the bar at this venue, as it allows you to watch the show through its large windows. - A. Rodriguez
Pre-concert CD recommendations: Popaganda by Head Automatica, featuring "Nowhere Fast" and "Graduation Day", and A Beautiful Lie by 30 Seconds to Mars.
