Moore Theatre - Sold out
Is this Snow Patrol's third trip to Seattle in 2006? No. It just seems that way. The rock super group skipped two previous area engagements, both due to unintentional and unfortunate events. In June, lead singer Gary Lightbody was forced into a brief hiatus when he was diagnosed with a rare throat infection called polyps. Then, two band members missed their flight into the US last month because of irregular customs processing following a high security upgrade at all airports, stemming from a foiled terror plot. Thus, Snow Patrol was forced to bow out of 107.7's "Endfest" show at White River Theatre, prompting a double whammy for fans. Which brings us to the Moore Theatre, the site of the group's sold out performance on Wednesday night.
Snow Patrol's timing was impeccable, emerging on the music scene between Coldplay's second and third albums. Anyone suffering from Coldplay withdrawals got their fix with Snow Patrol. But the Glasgow-based quintet refused to be anybody's copycats and instead concocted their own blend of infectious, melodramatic rock. Snow Patrol's premier radio single "Run" was an instant hit, the kind of song you could easily spend an afternoon listening to again and again and again. It's got a moody backdrop of guitars and heavy keyboards paired with irresistible singalong-friendly lyrics, and Lightbody's melancholy vocals sweeten an already gorgeous ballad. The flow of hit singles continued with "Spitting Games", "Chocolate" and "Wow". This year saw the release of Snow Patrol's new CD Eyes Open, which has remained on Billboard's top albums chart for several months.
Wednesday night's concert at the Moore Theatre is a grand affair for Snow Patrol devotees. It not only marks the ensemble's return to Seattle since summer of 05, but it makes up for their two canceled appearances. I'm a diehard Snow Patrol trooper and word of their show postponements took its toll on me twice in three months. So, I'm definitely looking forward to welcoming these guys to town. Finally! Expect to hear tracks from Final Straw and Eyes Open, and perhaps something from the band's earlier effort Reindeer Section. Snow Patrol's "Chocolate" is played during the opening credits of Zach Braff's upcoming film The Last Kiss, and they've volunteered to sign copies for the Seattle Gay News to give away via Sonic Boom Records. Opening for Snow Patrol is Augustana, who're on the road promoting their album All the Stars and Boulevards. Get to the concert early and sip cocktails at the Moore's basement bar. - A. Rodriguez
Pre-concert CD recommendation: Final Straw (SGN's Top Ten Albums/CDs, 2004) featuring "Run" (SGN's Top Ten Singles/Tracks, 2004), "Chocolate" and "Wow".
