Religious leaders pledge to continue to work in support of full marriage equality for Gay and Lesbian couples

As religious leaders and people of faith, we are deeply saddened by the Washington State Supreme Court's decision today, which denied same sex couples the full rights and benefits of marriage. Rev. Monica Corsaro, a Methodist minister and co-convener of the Religious Coalition for Equality, said, "In our role as pastors, we have seen the suffering of same-sex couples who are denied the benefits of marriage. We had hoped that today discrimination against loving couples based on sexual orientation would have become a thing of the past."

Dr. Stephen Jones, Coordinating Pastor at Seattle First Baptist Church and co-convener of the Religious Coalition for Equality, said, "We are committed to securing full marriage equality for all couples without regard to their sexual orientation. Our faith requires that we seek justice and love mercy. We are required by our faith to speak out in favor of full marriage rights for all loving couples."

Rev. Paul Benz, a Lutheran minister and a member of the Religious Coalition for Equality Steering Committee, said, "We will continue our efforts to educate legislators about the need for the protections of civil marriage for couples who love each other and whose families, often including children, are denied these benefits. We will also continue to point out that civil marriage and religious marriage are different and distinct institutions, and that granting same-sex couples the rights of civil marriage will not require any church or religious denomination to marry same-sex couples or to alter its teachings."
