Where It's At

by Lorelei Quenzer - SGN A&E Writer

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Dimitriou's Jazz Alley - For reservations call (206) 441-9729 / $24.50, two sets nightly

After all of the rain we've had this winter, I am really ready to jive and wail. And I can't think of anybody better suited to take me there than the swinging Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - zoot suited, that is.

Yup, I'm not too cool to admit that I love me some big band music. Ever since their "You and Me & the Bottle Makes 3" found its way onto the soundtrack for the 1996 movie Swingers, BBVD has electrified audiences from Honolulu to Hartford, even going as far as the Pori Jazz festival in Finland to please their far-flung fans.

BBVD is one of the most popular touring bands to hit the road, performing over 100 concerts each year to sold-out audiences. They carry on the tradition of legendary big bands and orchestras with infectious live renditions of classic songs from the swing era as well as original compositions. Think Miller, Goodman and Basie, complete with hip zoot suits, rat pack lingo and more moxie than any bandstand should allow, much less have room for.

BBVD's electrifying sound is courtesy of Scotty Morris (guitar, lead vocals), Glen "The Kid" Marhevka (trumpet), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Karl Hunter (tenor sax and clarinet), Andy Rowley (baritone sax), Joshua Levy (piano), Dirk Shumaker (string bass), Tony Bonsera (lead trumpet) and Alex Henderson (trombone). Here's hoping that Jazz Alley pulls a few tables back to make a dance floor, because that joint'll be jumpin'. Put on your dancing shoes, order your cocktail, and say it with me: "Go, Daddy, go!" - L. Quenzer Pre-concert CD recommendation: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live with bonus DVD, featuring "Jumpin' Jack," "Minnie the Moocher" and "You and Me & the Bottle Makes 3."
