Pride At Work co-president elected to AFL-CIO Executive Council
Pride At Work is proud to announce that Nancy Wohlforth, Pride At Work Co-President, was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council, the federation's top leadership body, during the AFL-CIO Convention in Chicago last week. Nancy is the first out Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender person to serve on the AFL-CIO Executive Council. Nancy is also the International Secretary-Treasurer of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), a Co-Convener of U.S. Labor Against The War, and a Vice President of the California Labor Federation.

"Nancy's election to the AFL-CIO Executive Council is a momentous step forward for all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender working people," said Josh Cazares, Pride At Work Co-President. "For decades, Nancy has been on the picket and protest lines, speaking up for those whose voices are often times not heard. Having Nancy on the Executive Council means that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community has a tireless advocate in the halls of power of the AFL-CIO, one who will never fail to speak up on our issues."

Nancy has a long history of fighting for the rights of working people, people of color, women, and the LGBT community. She began her activism in the sixties, standing side by side with people of color fighting for an end to racial inequality. She was a boisterous opponent of the Vietnam War. Working in San Francisco for OPEIU, Nancy fought for the rights of all workers, including advocating for domestic partner benefits and contract non-discrimination language that protects LGBT workers. Most recently, Nancy was instrumental in the passage of a resolution at the AFL-CIO Convention calling for the rapid withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

"The only way for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender workers to get and keep workplace protects and benefits that sustain our families is through a union contract," said Nancy Wohlforth, Pride At Work Co-President. "In my new role as a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council I will continue to spread this message and advocate for the full inclusion of all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender workers in the labor movement. We are workers, and we deserve a place at the table."

If there is a struggle for justice and equality, there is no doubt that you will find Nancy on the front lines. Pride At Work applauds her long history of activism and her election to the AFL-CIO Executive Council. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community could have no greater ally on the AFL-CIO Executive Council. Congratulations Nancy, you are the definition of "Pride At Work."
