Sun brings out fun
Sun brings out fun for ECSA play
by Nick Bowen

The sun came out this weekend and saw some great play in the Emerald City Softball games at the North Sea-Tac fields as well as Sunset playfields.

In the “B” division things have tightened up as the R Place Shock team tied the “B” division intra-divisional standings at one game a piece with an 11-10 win over their counterparts the RFR Firemen. Look for this head to head rivalry to go down to the wire with both teams fighting for the lone “B” division World Series berth. This years Gay Softball World Series will be held in San Diego, and the Emerald City Softball Association will be sending six teams from the “Open” division in mid-August.

There were a number of close games this week in the C division with the Thunder squeaking by the Back Fire Chiropractic Blue Sox by a single run 13 – 12, and the Titans with an impressive run against the “B” division Shock with an 8 – 10 loss.

The big news of the day was the Blue Sox as they toppled the powerhouse Seattle Sting with an offensive slam of 20-11. Brant L. (of the Blue Sox) completed his second day of C Division play with great defensive and offensive play. He was 7 for 9 hitting for a batting average of .778 and an on base percentage of .889. He went 4 for 5 in the Sting game as the lead off batter and set the tone of play for his fellow teammates.

The first place Brewers played out a defensive struggle and beat the 7th place Lumberjacks by a single run 9 – 8. Antony L. helped out the Brewer cause this week with a perfect day at the plate. He batted 7-7 with 2 singles, 2 doubles, 2 triples and a homerun.

In the “D” division, the Rockets continued their winning ways and remained undefeated, with the early divisional lead, cruising to wins over the Phoenix and the R Place Kings. The rivalry game of the day was a rematch from the championship game of the Emerald City Classic, Seattle’s yearly tournament held over the Memorial Day weekend. Last years ECC winner, the West Seattle Bowl Diamonds, matched up against last years “D” division winners and World Series representatives the Madison Pub Maulers, with the Maulers hitting their way to a 14-5 victory. Grandpa pitched and commented “OK we got you today, but you all played great.”

In a number of close games all decided by one run, the Eclipse beat the Diamonds in extra innings, 15-14; the Jaguars beat the Phoenix for their first win of the year, 14 – 13; and in a high scoring affair, the Maulers held on to beat the Castaways, 16 – 15; and the Kozmoz rallied to beat the Jaguars, 10 – 9.

Next weekend has some Saturday games as rain-out make up games from the first week of play, where the first place Brewers will take on the second place Attack for the early season bragging rights atop the “C” division. Sunday also holds some great match ups worth seeing. Both the inter-divisional games between the “A” and “B” division teams should prove fun to watch. In a C-B interdivisional game the undefeated “C” Brewers will take on the “B” division leaders the RFR Firemen in what should be a great game.

So come out and join the fun in the sun next weekend! Remember you can find all the latest news and standings on our website at

Be sure to join us at our after play party, next Sunday hosted by Changes in Wallingford!
